Our Friday Night at the Corvette Diner

Recently, on a Friday evening, my daughter called and asked if I'd like to join her family for dinner.  They wanted to surprise the children so they took a circuitous route to get to the restaurant.  The children were unfamiliar with the route, but as the car got nearer, my granddaughter recognized the location.  My grandson didn't catch on until they were in the parking lot.  He was so excited to be at the Corvette Diner, he literally jumped up and down with a big smile on his face.

The Corvette Diner is located on the former Marine Corps property at Point Loma in San Diego.  When we entered, we were seated immediately in the 'diner' section.   The decor reminds you of a diner of yesteryear.  Each table has a window that displays snippets of movies and popular TV shows of the 1950's, like Lucy and Desi and Leave it to Beaver.  The movies shown were scenes of "Sabrina" with Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart, and another of Fred Astaire dancing.  This is a great way to keep the customers happy while waiting for service.  It's also a great walk down 'memory lane.'

The waitresses wear poodle skirts that were popular in the 1950's.  Both male and female servers participate in a dance routine, performed several times a night.  A man who creates figures from balloons made the animal selected by my grandson.  So, as you can imagine, you never get bored waiting for your food.  Everyone enjoyed their meal and the atmosphere.

This is a restaurant well worth the visit.  Please keep in mind that on the night we went there was no waiting.  However, on other nights we have had to wait for a table.  I encourage you to check out the Corvette Diner.

Rosarito Earthquake

Last night I was sitting at the computer when I felt a roll in the floor followed by something in my kitchen actually rocking (my living room, dining room, and kitchen are an open floor plan).  In my estimation, it was strong, so I just prayed.  It didn't last long at all.  I immediately checked on the computer and sure enough, there was an earthquake in the waters off Rosarito, Mexico, which is over 60 miles south of my home.  I rose from my chair, went into the kitchen to check my microwave and then, I realized that this appliance was on a level cabinet.  Also, there are little statuettes and handmade Thanksgiving turkeys sitting on top of it.  Nothing there was moved.  But something  in my kitchen rocked.  It was a little scary.

My apartment complex might lie on the Point Loma Fault.  I know it is west of the Rose Canyon fault. Thankfully, I didn''t feel any aftershocks.  Just another day in sunny San Diego, CA.

All Quiet on the Home Front

It is now 3:50am. It is 70 degrees and I'm awake. I guess our real summer is arriving here in San Diego. Of course, it is nothing to complain about with other parts of the US suffering under much higher temperatures. When I moved from New York to San Diego, my co-workers kept telling me that our "real" summer would occur in August and September. Well, it turned out to be true. It pays to listen to the locals.

With our visitors from New York having returned home, life has settled back into the regular routine. My San Diego grandchildren have been going to camp or preschool.

When the teenage grandchildren arrived from New York, the first question my 14 year old grandson asked was "How come you call your highways the 5, the 405, the 15, etc?" Well, I don't know. Practically every East Coast visitor has asked that. In the Northeast, highways are identified as "Route 9, Route 95, etc.", except for "the Turnpike", "The Garden State" or "the Thruway". Also, here in San Diego located on the Pacific Ocean, we go to the beach. On the East Coast, if we are going to the ocean, it is called "the shore", like "Jersey Shore." If you are going to Long Island, it is "the island", or "the Hamptons" if you are uber-rich. I'm sure other areas of the US have their own terminology.

So, onto other summer adventures. I'm looking forward to visiting my son's family in Redondo Beach. I'll use Amtrak for that trip and will, of course, share that with you.
